Composite — 7:40pm, any kitchen table. Dinner's done, the dishes aren't, and a phone is doing the thing a parent used to do: keeping a small person calm and quiet for the next twenty minutes. It works. It always works. Nobody in that kitchen chose the video that's playing. That prediction is the whole relationship. None of this requires a villain. No engineer sets out to raise someone else's kid badly. It requires only an ordinary business fact: the platform's customer is the advertiser, the platform's product is attention, and the child is the raw material being refined into both. A parent choosing a video is accountable to the child. A ranking model is accountable to a quarterly retention metric. Those are not the same job, even when they produce the same-looking fifteen minutes of quiet.
