Every Five Years

“I brought my broken heart back to you”The light keeps spinning. This time they stay.

They were seventeen on a lookout in the salt air. They are thirty-five now. Same lighthouse, same December wind. A song about the reunion that finally refuses the next gap.

The record

They kept meeting every five years. This time they stay.

Every Five Years is set on one stretch of coast across eighteen years — a lighthouse that never stops spinning, a lookout they first stood on at seventeen, and the December they finally refuse to leave.

It is not a breakup song. It is a song about the gap getting smaller until it closes.

The coast

Water on the rocks, and a lookout at seventeen

The song opens on duration itself — five years passing the way seawater passes over the same rocks, again and again, wearing them down without ever deciding anything. Then it puts you on the lookout. They are seventeen. The salt is in their lungs. One of them has bruised knuckles; the other has doubts. That is the entire setup.

Cut to now: thirty-five, in the cold. Twenty years of running in circles just to find out who was always there. The lighthouse has been spinning the whole time. They are the ones who left and came back.

A tall dark lighthouse on wet black rocks at night, a single cold beam through sea mist.
The light that does not stop. They did.
Dark seawater pouring over wet black coastal rocks at night.
Five years, passing the same way the water does.
A winter sea under a storm, white spray against black water.
The weather they kept waiting to clear.
A lighthouse lantern room at night, the fresnel lens spinning a cold white beam.

The chorus

Two broken hearts, handed back

The hook is a return, not a plea. The light keeps spinning on the tide — the one thing in the song that never left, and the water it is built to watch. Under it, they trade the same sentence: I brought my broken heart back to you. You brought yours back to me.

Then the decision the rest of the record is built to earn: no more running through the storm. We finally stayed. Past tense, on purpose. The leaving is already over.

“I brought my broken heart back to you”

Verse two

A quarter century of watching people leave

The verse that hurts is the inventory. Wrong ones in different towns. A ring worn that wasn’t meant to last. Every five December winds they met up top, counting scars like tally marks against the wall — a reunion so regular it became a calendar, and so brief it always slipped.

Until the clock stops. Looking at the other person’s face is the first time in the song that time actually pauses. Everything before that was interval. This is arrival.

They spoke real fast because time was always slipping. Then it didn’t.

Two sets of footprints in wet dark sand, heading toward a winter sea.
Look at us now. The same stretch of sand.
A single gold ring lying on wet dark wood.
A ring that wasn’t meant to last.
Scars counted as chalk tally marks on a dark damp wall.
Scars, counted like marks on a wall.
A still dark harbour at night, a faint warm light on the water.

The bridge

The haven was already here

They were waiting for the storm to clear. The song’s quietest trick is that the shelter was the place they kept leaving. Already right here. A hand in a hand that feels like old habit — not because it is small, because it is the one thing that survived the interval.

The long path home is not a metaphor for growth. It is the literal walk back down from the gallery, this time without a return ticket.

Three objects

What the years left on the gallery

The video never puts a face on screen. It puts the things they would have touched.

A winter lookout at night, salt wind across a dark iron rail.
Every five December winds, up top.
An old stopped analogue clock face lying on wet dark sand.
The first time the clock actually stops.
Two worn lockets on a dark wet surface.
Old habit. Still theirs.

The outro

Home at last

Five years from now, no need to travel. The song spends two and a half minutes establishing a cycle and then, in the last twenty seconds, cancels it. Staying right here. Staying with you. Right by the water.

The last line is sung twice. The first time it is a decision. The second time it is already true.

A wet dark path leading back toward a harbour light.
The long path home, walked once.
Calm dark harbour water at night with a faint warm window-light reflection.
Right by the water. Home at last.

Line by line

Reading the record

Nothing below is hidden — it is all on the surface if you sit with it. But the images repeat and reinforce each other, and that is easier to see written down.

Intro

  • Five years pass like water on the rocksTime as weather. The years are not empty — they are the same motion, repeating, wearing the place down.
  • We stood right here at seventeenThe location is locked. Every later reunion is a return to this exact gallery.
  • Holding salt air inside our lungsThe coast as something they carry. It is in them before it is around them.
  • You had your bruised knuckles, I had my doubtsTwo different kinds of damage, named in the same breath. He was already marked; she was already unsure.
  • Now thirty-five hits different in the coldThe jump: eighteen years in a cut. Maturity is colder than the lookout was.
  • (hits so different now)The contrast said twice so it cannot be missed.
  • We spent twenty years running in circlesA confession. The search was the detour. Staying would have been shorter.
  • Just to find out who was always thereThe right person was never missing. They were.

Chorus

  • The light keeps spinning on the tideThe one object that never left. A lighthouse is built to watch water; the tide is the clock it keeps.
  • I brought my broken heart back to youNot a request. A delivery. The heart is damaged and it is still being handed over.
  • You brought yours back to meThe trade is even. That symmetry is the whole argument of the chorus.
  • No more running through the stormThe running is named so it can be stopped. Until this line the song is all interval.
  • We finally stayedPast tense. The leaving is already over. The thesis in three words.
  • (finally stayed right here)The place is as important as the decision. Not anywhere. Here.

Verse two

  • Yeah, look at us nowAmazed, not triumphant. They can hardly believe the cycle closed.
  • Quarter century watching other people leaveThe audience for other people’s exits. They stayed in the cycle; everyone else left for good.
  • I loved the wrong ones in different townsMistakes made while searching — geographically and emotionally. The towns are the proof it was not once.
  • You wore a ring that wasn’t meant to lastShe tried to commit elsewhere. Temporary on purpose, which does not make the ending gentler.
  • Every five December winds, we met up topThe title, finally sung. A calendar appointment with weather.
  • Counting scars like tally marks against the wallRomance counted like a prison sentence. Beautiful and administrative at once.
  • Spoke real fast cause time was always slippingThey rushed the reunions because they never felt secure in the moment they had.
  • Now I look at your face and the clock stops tickingLooking at the face is the first pause the song allows. Arrival, not interval.
  • (stops right here)The clock, and the wandering, stop in the same place.

Bridge

  • We were waiting for the storm to clearThey treated the lighthouse as a waiting room. It was the destination.
  • Never knew the haven was already hereThe quietest line on the record. Shelter was the person, not a later, calmer version of the weather.
  • (already right here)Closeness restated so it lands as fact, not discovery.
  • Your hand in mine feels like old habitReconnecting as muscle memory. Years apart did not have to be relearned.
  • We took the long path homeThe circuitous years were necessary. That does not make them kind.

Outro

  • Five years from now, no need to travelThe cycle cancelled in one sentence. The next reunion is not a reunion.
  • I’m staying right hereA promise of location. Stability named as a place, not a feeling.
  • (staying with you)The destination is a person. The lookout is just where they happen to be.
  • Right by the waterThe imagery closes the circle: the same coast the song opened on.
  • Home at lastSung twice. Decision, then fact.

How it was made

Basement stack, end to end

Written, produced, cut and rendered in-house. No stock footage and no licensed imagery — every frame was generated for this song specifically, then graded into one continuous coastal-winter world so that scene changes dissolve instead of cutting.

Every Five Years key art: a lighthouse on wet rocks at night.
Key art. One world, no stock.
A lighthouse lantern room at night, the fresnel lens spinning a cold white beam.
The light the type has to sit in.
A still dark harbour at night, moonlight on the water.
The haven the song finally names.
