Fifteen hundred years of secrets, floating on water.

Fifteen hundred years ago, people fleeing invaders hid in this lagoon — and never left. They built a city on mud, and then taught the world how big it was: one Venetian, Marco Polo, walked to China and back.

The ombra

A bacaro is a Venetian wine bar — and an ombra is a tiny shadow of wine. Zara ordered one shadow. It arrived by the bucket.
